Birding Tour with Mike Houck

Watch Bald Eagles and Raptors of Sauvie Island! Mike Houck, Director of the Urban Greenspaces Institute, will be leading an early morning winter outing on January 16, 2016, on scenic Sauvie Island to view Bald Eagles, Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers, Peregrine Falcons, Red-tailed Hawks, and other birds of prey. Mike, who's also co-editor of Wild in the City: A Guide to Portland's Natural Areas and producer of Wild in the Willamette, Exploring the Lower Willamette River, Mike will also point out the Sandhill Cranes by the hundreds, along with the thousands waterfowl that make the island home during the winter months. Mike will provide spotting scopes for close-up views. You bring your binoculars -- and scopes if you have ‘em -- and be ready for great winter birding adventure! At noon, Mike will provide a picnic lunch at a suitable location.

A One-Of-A-Kind Evening with Oregon Author Brian Doyle

If you love books, and enjoy an endless supply of fine pinot noirs and gourmet bites with friends… Spend an evening with the peculiar Oregon writer Brian Doyle, author of fourteen books. Doyle’s works include the novels Mink River, The Plover, Cat's Foot, the story collection Bin Laden's Bald Spot, the nonfiction books The Grail and The Wet Engine, and many books of essays and poems. This evening we will be pondering and discussing his latest, Martin, Marten: A Novel set in the foothills of Mt Hood. Consider the evening to be an idiosyncratic sort of book club around Martin where Brian will raconteurate, riff, and remind you of why you love Oregon.

Noble Fir Christmas Trees - On The “Wild” Side!
Wild (unpruned) Noble Fir Christmas Trees from the Fritsch Family Farm for $20 each - any size! Sizes vary from 3' to 20'. Tall trees can be trimmed down or topped to fit what you need. Cut one for your house, work, organization, and/or church for the holidays. Fill that vaulted room with elevated holiday cheer -- there are plenty of nice large trees, smaller trees are true wild ones no pruning for a past few years. In the tree hatchery world these are natural type trees. You need a tress and we need them thinned out for more pasture -- for the hay burners (okay, 4H horses -- Braveheart, Marquee and Doc). Located in Beavercreek, OR (just south of Oregon City).
Quick Casts Portland, Oregon: Top Fishing Spots within an Hour's Drive of the City
Quick Casts Portland, Oregon, by author Jim Yuskavitch, is the essential fishing guide to the greater Portland Area. All of the top fishing spots you'll find in this guide are within an hour's drive of Portland! So, as the book says, "whether you're interested in trolling for salmon or fly fishing for steelhead, dredging the Columbia for sturgeon or casting a spinner for bass, it may be surprising to learn that some of the best fishing in the Northwest is only a lure's toss away from the commotion of downtown Portland." A handy read, indeed!
